Why Google Photos is shit!

After happily using google photos for the free backup storage for many years all recent updates to the apps have caused no end of problems.

  1. Uploads using the free option have now started using up storage limits for no reason - maybe this is a good ploy to force people to purchase storage.
  2. The desktop app is forever syncing and when it starts again causes multiple duplicate photos
  3. There is no way to identify duplicate photos online
  4. Woke up today to find that photos older than a year or two are now in the bin!
  5. You can only restore 1500 photos at a time! - SERIOUSLY!
If you want to backup your photos use local storage first and then use cloud storage as an offsite backup to that instead.

Any stay the hell away from Google Photos as it is far from reliable!

IFTTT update: Window shades, finance tools, home security, & more — new on IFTTT

Summer has been sizzling at IFTTT HQ, but we aren’t just talking about 🌭 and 🏖. In between tanning sessions, we’ve been working with exceptional companies and products to bring you new services and Applets that keep you connected to all your favorite tech. So, take a look at the latest and let us know what you think.

So bright you gotta wear shades

Both Automate Shades and Connector Applets give you better control over the internet connected shades in your home, so you can lower them to block out the heat of the day or raise them to enjoy the sunset, all without leaving the comfort of your couch.

Working hard for the money

Whether you’re saving up for a last-minute beach vacation or something a bit closer to home, check out ING Australia and Monzo’s new tools to help you meet your finance goals.

There’s no place like home

So let’s keep it safe and secure while you’re out of town! M2M Services and LifeShield Applets provide peace of mind while you’re away, so you can focus on the important things. Like getting more umbrella drinks.

For some of us, there’s nothing quite like sleeping in your own bed after a big adventure. For others? Adjusting to life after vacation can be a bit of a bummer 😑.  Either way, we have you covered. Hive View’s indoor video monitoring kept you up-to-date on the hijinks your pets (or teenagers!) got up to while you were away, so there should be no big surprises. And new Applets from Sengled, MicroBot Push, MicroBot Sense, VeSync, and MobiLinc will help you get your home’s temperature, lighting, music, and more dialed in so reentry is as painless as possible.

Keep in touch

That’s a wrap for now! Let us know what you think of these new tools. Or, if you’d like to be notified ASAP whenever something new is published, use the Applets below to receive notifications.

IFTTT update: IFTTT + Wyze Cam = connected home security for all

Using smart cameras for home security is a popular topic here at IFTTT, but we realize that outfitting a whole house with cameras can be an expensive prospect. This is why Wyze’s new integration on IFTTT is so exciting.

This WiFi-enabled camera is a total steal. It only costs $20. $30 if you want the fancy new version with panning functionality. It shoots 1080p HD, and features night vision, two-way audio, and free 14-day cloud storage for your alert videos. Best of all? It has built-in smoke and CO detection, which is a first for connected cameras on IFTTT.

Once you have your Wyze cameras in place, we’ll help you arm and disarm motion sensing, manage your alerts and saved videos, and more. So, let’s make sure you’re capturing video where you want it, when you want it, whether you’re using Wyze for security or creating a cool time-lapse video of your construction project!

Motion detection

Some people stick to the same schedule most days: leave for work at 8AM, get home at 6PM, in bed no later than 10:34PM every night. Others have a more, shall we say, fluid sense of time and space. Whether you run a tight ship or prefer flying by the seat of your pants, you can now automate when Wyze starts looking for movement in your home.

Notifications or nah?

If you have a new kitten or puppy at home, you might want to know every time it ventures into the kitchen. Who knows when the cuteness (or destruction) is going to strike, right? But at the same time you might not want to get a text every time your teenager is in there looking for a snack. These Applets control when and how you get notifications, so you stay connected without getting overwhelmed.

Keep your home safe

From alerting the fire department when the smoke detector goes off to saving regularly-scheduled videos for later review, you can keep an eye on your home from afar with minimal effort.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Wyze and IFTTT, so we’re excited to see how you put us to work!  Watch this space for more Applets as they are published, and if you’re ready to create your own, get started here.
